What does DPI mean?

DPI (dots per inch) tells printers and design apps how large to print an image. Print shops, publishers and many forms ask for 300 DPI. Changing DPI does not add or remove pixels: a 3000 × 2000 pixel photo prints at 10 × 6.7 inches at 300 DPI, or about 41.7 × 27.8 inches at 72 DPI.

JPG

JPG (also called JPEG) is the most widely used photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep files small and works everywhere, but it does not support transparency and loses a little quality every time it is re-saved.

PNG

PNG is a lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparent backgrounds. It is ideal for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics, but photos saved as PNG are often very large.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing DPI reduce quality?

No. This tool only rewrites the DPI value stored in the file. The pixels are untouched, so quality and file size stay the same.

How do I get a 300 DPI image for printing?

Set the DPI to 300 here. If the print size shown is smaller than you need, the image has too few pixels for that size at 300 DPI.

Is this DPI converter tool free?

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks and no limits on the number of images.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Your images are processed entirely inside your browser, so they never leave your device. That makes it private and very fast, even for large files.

Can I change the DPI of many images at once?

Yes. Drop or select as many images as you like. Each one is processed in turn, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP file.

Does it work on iPhone, Android and Mac?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing needs to be installed.
