When to crop an image
Cropping removes distractions, tightens your composition and fits a photo to the exact shape a platform needs: 1:1 for profile pictures and Instagram posts, 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails and slides, 4:5 for Instagram portrait posts and 9:16 for stories.
JPG (also called JPEG) is the most widely used photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep files small and works everywhere, but it does not support transparency and loses a little quality every time it is re-saved.
PNG is a lossless format that keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparent backgrounds. It is ideal for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics, but photos saved as PNG are often very large.
WebP is a modern image format created by Google. It supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality. All modern browsers support it.

Frequently asked questions
Does cropping reduce image quality?
The pixels you keep are not changed. Choose PNG output for a lossless result, or JPG or WEBP at high quality for smaller files.
Can I crop to an exact pixel size?
The live size under the image shows the exact crop in pixels. To also scale a crop to a fixed size such as 1080 × 1080, use one of our resize-to-size tools afterwards.
Is this image cropper tool free?
Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks and no limits on the number of images.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Your images are processed entirely inside your browser, so they never leave your device. That makes it private and very fast, even for large files.
Can I crop many images at once?
Yes. Drop or select as many images as you like. Each one is processed in turn, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP file.
Does it work on iPhone, Android and Mac?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing needs to be installed.
